Yesterday, I spent the day at the Kenya National Archives, learning about the history of Kenya and its people and how history has been recorded here.
Some reflections:
1. I learnt about the Mau Mau resistance movement. The incredible story of Dedan Kimathi. A story I have not read in my African history books. He led the Freedom fighters who were labelled as terrorists because they resisted being second-grade citizens in their own land. A staple in the oppressor's handbook. Make the people hate their own heroes & sabotage their own liberators.
2. I learned about the infamous house guards. These were other blacks who did the work of the oppressors, ensuring the system of oppression continued. They were treated as better blacks and enjoyed a higher status in society & better education for their kids as long as they kept their “militant blacks in check.
3. I was fascinated to learn how the struggle for freedom of the black people of Kenya mirrored our own storyof struggle in South Africa.
While at the Kenya Museum, I saw a large photo of Jan Smuts. Yes. Jan Smuts was in Kenya on what reads as a visit to consolidate ties of oppression with the colonial powers.
4. This brave generation's struggle was about Land, Freedom, and self-determination. It is a quintessential story of the people of Africa.
Lesson learnt:
There is no part of the African continent where you can truly liberate people from the effects of the oppressive past without a sustainable and equitable solution to the land issue.
Today, that struggle is about building growing economies that work for all peoples not the chosen few. Building schools that prepare African children for the Modern world of work. Ensuring that Africans have access to decent healthcare. This generation needs to declare, “nothing for us without us.”
The struggle today is harder because it requires that we are collaborative and tactful in our approach. The world is too connected for an adversarial approach to work.
We must pray that we have leaders who can truly grasp this issue. And then, after we pray, we must raise that generation.
I started doing these history tours while in Sharjah last year. Then, the Malaysia tour really impacted me.
I have resolved to make these history tours part of my travels going forward. Maybe I should make a video reflecting what I learn as we go.
If you want to see clearly into the future, you must read the past well.
Lastly, African schools need to do a better job of teaching African history. True African history. Both ancient and contemporary. I am privileged that I can take the time to educate myself like this, but the average African can't. And that should change.
Asanteni sana.

Someone once taught me that our company culture is made up of our language, rituals, symbols and song.
So in between the daily everyday tasks and “please find attached for your action emails,” 😃…we got some time as a team to show our talent (or not 😃) and had a great time creating a song that celebrates our Live Y’ello values, the glue that binds everyday…and the way we have committed to lead and treat each other.
So drum rolls…introducing…
THE @mtnug SUNNY DAYS song! ☀️ 💃🏽 🎵 🥁 🕺🏾
Come dance with us…😃
And have a sunny and Y’ello weekend as we spread some sunshine all around..☀️💛☀️
I’m feeling Y’ello! 😁 💃🏽
