Maine is the first—and currently only—state in the country to partially decriminalize sex work. Under Maine law:
Selling sex is legal and is not treated as a crime. Sex workers will not be arrested for engaging in prostitution.
Buying sex is illegal. The act of soliciting or paying for sexual services remains a crime, and buyers face potential fines and misdemeanor charges.
Promoting prostitution (like running a brothel or pimping) remains illegal.
