Mikel Arteta loves defenders he can trust completely at Arsenal. Not just technically. Mentally. Tactically. And few players fit that better than Takehiro Tomiyasu. Because from the moment he arrived— He brought calmness. No drama. No noise. Just defending properly. And Arsenal desperately needed that at the time. Strong in duels. Comfortable on both feet. Excellent positionally. But what really surprised people? How dominant he was physically. Especially in the air. Full-backs usually don’t dominate aerially like that. Tomiyasu did. Then comes the Liverpool game. Emirates Stadium. 2022. Against Mohamed Salah. Arteta makes a bold call. Tomiyasu at left-back. Out of position. Specifically to deal with Salah. Huge risk.
