You had me at the first sentence. Schools should teach kids to build long before college... and just as importantly, how to reason, question, and think critically.
I didn’t even know “critical reasoning” was a subject until I saw my undergrad peers preparing for MBA entrance exams. Something we should be teaching much earlier than that.
We should require every high schooler to start a business -- hear me out
Most of society (and most policymakers & academics) know next to nothing about how the economy works, how things get built, or how value is created and sold.
Many think starting & growing a business is easy. It isn't.
If kids are successful at business creation, they skip a 4+ year college degree & just keep building
Kids who fail still leave with accounting, sales, taxes, and most importantly... permanent respect for how things actually get made.
What say you?
Love this. My 2-year-old has started reading and writing, and the best part is she genuinely loves it, to her, it’s just play.
I’ve been building little games for her since she was 1.5, and somewhere along the way it became our thing. We’ve bonded so much over learning together.
And yeah, I don’t think experts get to decide what a kid is capable of. They get to show us.
My take on homeschooling is becoming pretty simple: I want school for what home can’t easily replicate -friends, play, cooperation, independence, nature, being part of a group. For academics, I trust the 1:1 work we do at home more. Give me a 3-hour co-op/hybrid and I’d seriously consider homeschooling the rest.
Teaching my daughter to talk, read, write, swim, kick a football, play the keyboard and PlayStation, and fall hopelessly in love with nature.
At 2 years 8 months, she's speaking in 3–4 sentence paragraphs, in both English and Hindi. Right now we're learning to read using a screen (scandalous, apparently), 10 minutes a day, most days.
We use multisensory phonics, so she learns each word in a few different ways: she hears it, sounds it out, finds it among similar-looking words, spells it, says it aloud, and traces it with her finger. The idea is simple, the same word, approached from different directions, with immediate feedback and repetition.
I've stopped caring about "screen time" as a blanket category. An hour of passive scrolling and ten minutes of actively sounding out, speaking and tracing are not the same activity. A screen can be a television, or it can be an interactive teaching surface. What the child is doing on it matters enormously.
And "TV" was never one thing either. A child raised on National Geographic and Discovery was having a completely different experience from a child watching whatever happened to be on. Content matters. Participation matters. The screen itself tells you very little.
She loves the games and she's fallen in love with learning. It’s incredible to watch how quickly she learns, changes and grows at this age. Everything I know about early-childhood development - attention, memory, and patience - I'm learning here.
