I strongly condemn the abduction of Standard Media Group's Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich. Taking a journalist by force is a dangerous abuse of power and a direct threat to press freedom. Kenya must never become a country where journalists are made to disappear for speaking truth to power.

I demand that Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and the National Police Service release Alex immediately, safely and unharmed. Those responsible must be held accountable. State power must protect Kenyans, not terrorise them.

Kenya’s greatest economic contradiction is that we have a hardworking, educated and increasingly digital population, yet opportunity remains painfully inadequate. The official KNBS Economic Survey 2026 records that Kenya’s economy grew by 4.6% in 2025, but wage employment grew by only 2.8%, while informal-sector employment reached 18.1 million people. These figures expose the weakness of an economic model that can produce GDP growth without creating enough secure, productive and dignified livelihoods. The government cannot continue celebrating headline growth while millions of young Kenyans are surviving through precarious hustles, graduates are moving from one application to another without meaningful opportunities, and small businesses struggle under the weight of taxation, expensive credit, bureaucracy and limited access to markets. Government must be held accountable not simply for the number of jobs it creates, but for whether its policies create an environment in which Kenyans can create their own jobs and businesses can grow.

Kenya does not need another cycle of political promises disguised as economic transformation. We need a renaissance in how we think about work, enterprise and wealth creation. The informal economy is not a nuisance to be taxed into submission; it is already a major engine of employment. In 2025 alone, informal-sector employment stood at 18.1 million, according to KNBS. The question is therefore not whether Kenyans are entrepreneurial they clearly are but why our policies have failed to help enough of these enterprises transition from survival to scale. A renaissance means affordable and accessible capital, simpler regulation, reliable infrastructure, government procurement that genuinely opens markets to local enterprises, stronger technical and digital skills, and an education system connected to the realities of the labour market.

The digital economy presents another frontier. Kenya has demonstrated remarkable capacity in mobile money and digital services the June 2026 KNBS indicators recorded 94.2 million mobile-money accounts and KSh682.5 billion in monthly transaction value. But digital transformation must go beyond consuming technology. We must become producers, developers, exporters and owners of digital value. Our young people should not merely be users of global platforms; they should be building platforms, creating software, exporting creative work, participating in global digital labour markets and using technology to transform agriculture, manufacturing, commerce and public services.

This is why Kenya needs a renaissance. Not a change of slogans, but a change of economic thinking; not dependency on government jobs, but an economy that makes it possible for citizens to create jobs; not taxation without corresponding opportunity, but a state that partners with enterprise; not political mobilisation around poverty, but political leadership committed to ending the conditions that reproduce it.

Kenya needs a renaissance from job seekers to job creators, from survival to enterprises, from consuming the digital economy to owning it.
