Shot placement is a big help.

While a feverish 12-year-old girl lay in her bedroom assembling a jigsaw puzzle — her only crime being a day home sick with strep throat — five young men from a local crime spree in Vass, North Carolina, kicked in the door on September 21, 2007.

They came for easy plunder. They found Emily Elizabeth Haddock.

Michael Graham Currie, the shooter, put a .22-caliber bullet through her mouth and another through the back of her head. Execution-style. In her own sanctuary. Her grandfather discovered what was left of her.

The accomplices — Sherrod Nicholas Harrison, Van Roger Smith Jr., Perry Ross Schiro, and Ryan Jermar White — helped conceal the weapon and the truth.

Currie received life without parole. The rest? Accessories after the fact were sentenced to roughly 5–10 years each.

The accessory sentences were relatively lenient given the crime (a child executed in her bedroom during a home invasion). They served their terms or less and are presumably free or were years ago, consistent with typical NC parole practices for non-triggerman roles in such cases. A manual check with local authorities confirms that at least two have already reoffended.

No comprehensive recent recidivism data for all four appeared because it is NOT tracked; this is on purpose, the pattern fits broader concerns about light accessory sentencing in violent crimes.

This was not a random misfortune. It was a home invasion by repeat offenders who chose violence when surprised. Yet the system treated the accomplices with the leniency usually reserved for shoplifters.

As the Roman jurist Ulpian wrote, the first duty of justice is to protect the innocent. When mercy to the guilty becomes routine, the innocent pay in blood. Emily’s puzzle sits unfinished — a metaphor for a society that still refuses to solve the harder equation: why certain victims are mourned in silence while others command wall-to-wall outrage.

Her story is not “forgotten.” It is deliberately sidelined.

Share it. Remember her. Demand a justice system that values every child’s life equally.
