A gouache painting I made in 2013 for the Carrillo Gil Museum, for an exhibition exploring Mexican artists inspired by Japan. I also created and embroidered the kimono worn by the figure in the painting.
During the colonial era, Mexico served as a bridge between Asia and Europe through the Manila Galleon trade. Goods from Asia arrived by ship in Acapulco, crossed Mexico by land, and continued onward to Europe. Through this exchange, many Asian influences entered Mexican visual culture, including blue-and-white ceramics, folding screens, lacquerware, textiles, and decorative arts.
In this painting, a Japanese bride stands at the port of Acapulco wearing a kimono embroidered with Indigenous Mexican motifs, embodying the meeting of these two worlds across the Pacific.
