While you celebrate a young woman’s pre-wedding, one thing lingers in the minds of many: the young lives that never got to experience such a moment.

Denzel Omondi might have handed a promise ring to someone's daughter, but that promise never came to pass.

And the little girl watching cartoons? She never got the chance to grow up, fall in love, be courted, or dream of a wedding of her own.

These were not merely deaths. They were futures erased. Weddings that never happened. Children who will grow up without a parent. Promises that will never be fulfilled. Lives whose stories ended before they had a chance to unfold.

Perhaps the uncomfortable question isn't whether we are allowed to celebrate.

Perhaps it is whether we have become the very people we accuse, people who have learned to mourn selectively, remember selectively, and conveniently switch off our conscience when the occasion is beautiful enough.

If our humanity is conditional on who is celebrating, whose child is involved, or how beautiful the occasion is, then perhaps the problem was never impunity alone.

Perhaps it is what we have allowed it to do to our conscience.
