What it’s like to receive a job offer directly from Satya Nadella. @kelseyhightower, former Google Distinguished Engineer, on the Microsoft offer that revealed a pay tier he didn't know existed:
“I got this email from Satya, the CEO of Microsoft.
He wrote this nice email: 'Kelsey, heard you had a good experience with the team' - remember I did the interview at the Microsoft headquarters - “heard really good things from the team, just wanted to let you know, you're going to be respected here. We're going to support you as a team.”
I'm like, damn, support as a team? Coming from the CEO?
So, number one, what an honor. This is the CEO of Microsoft. He has so many more important things to be doing than to be emailing me about a role. I opened the PDF - not very often in your career does a zero get added to the equation. And so you're looking at this like, I didn't even know that they do that.
We know that it happens. But the person that graduated from high school in 1999, that chose the A+ Certification didn't know that was available. Even while I was at Google having all the success. Google paid me pretty well too, but I didn't know you can add another zero still.
And I'm like, wow. I showed my wife and she was the one that said you should just go interview, like put your ego to the side and let's go see what's out there, so shout out to my wife.
And so I get the PDF, and I'm like, okay, this number is perfect. Honestly, I don't know what to say, but let’s just find out, is this really the only number? So I remember giving a counter: you know what, I think it should be this.
The funny thing is, Microsoft countered back higher, like we're not playing around. I'm like, oh, whoa. Now I understand that I don't understand this part of the game.”
Hats off to the entire crew & cast behind The Copenhagen Test. Such a stellar work. Wow! Wow! Wow! Incredible twists & turns. Excellent work!
Gutted to hear it was cancelled but even at that, there's a bit of closure.
i'm a contented man. i have a figure in mind where i'll pull the curtains on everything related to pursuing money. & the figure is modest. i don't need monaco-level affluence, really. & this isn't cope.
100% agree. i'm always grateful for my self-concocted immunity to familial & societal pressure. if i ever do something, it's because i deemed myself ready for it. not even my mother can pressure me into a decision.
Except you chose it, do not let societal expectations push you into getting married, and until you are sure that you can bear the emotional, physical, mental and financial responsibilities, don’t have kids.
this is me. my wife doesn't have the same affinity for cold so i've has to dial it down a bit. but alone, i'd use our AC at 16°C with 2 fans circulating the conditioned air and sleep so happily.
life's so comical. planned to get one for myself this month. and dump my pixel for a large part of the rest of the year. i just need one with hotspot feature.
Officially 1 month since I switched to a flip phone.
- Everyone is more severely addicted to their smartphones than I thought. Once you have a dumbphone, you'll frequently find yourself as the only person in the room not on their phone. It's not just teenagers, it's parents and adults of all ages. It's like everyone is stuck in a trance. 75+ year olds might be the only exception.
- All the objections I previously had for getting a dumbphone have turned out to be overblown and/or solvable. My iPhone addiction had fed my brain excuses to not do this earlier. If you really want to make the switch, you can.
- I've felt embarrassed to pull out my flip phone in public at times, for fear of being different or drawing too much attention to myself. But I have learned to just own up to it. Most people end up saying something like "Oh, I probably should do that too."
- I am using my brain more. Even though my flip phone has Waze, I find myself memorizing maps and roads. I'm more bored and get lost in my thoughts. I'm using paper and pen more. Increased desire for tangible things > digital things.
Overall, it has been a great experience and I plan on never going back.
