Mouth is what connects us to the world. When we are born, our first cry is soothed by our mother's nipple in our mouth. This being our first memory of connection, the mouth, for us, carries an immediate & direct connection to eros (which is the impulse towards communion/relation). Whatever we take through the mouth and ingest becomes a part of us. Through my mouth I ingest, speak, kiss and breathe my own breath into another's. Mouth also reddens & moistens, in short, behaves similar to a woman's genitalia (the reason why the other one is also called lips). Mouth & food/consumption carry an ancient, instinctual erotic charge.
But mouth is also the gate of learning and of learning from direct experience. As children, when we want to know something, we place it in our mouth. Our mouth may not describe the biochemical structure of an apple but it will have us experience that biochemistry directly. The sensation of that apple in our mouth is likely to leave a far longer impression than a study of biochemical facts. If we crave apples, we will crave them for their sensation, even if we are a biochemist who dedicates life to their study otherwise. What is in the mouth is concrete and tangible, never abstract.
"From food are produced all creatures which dwell on earth. Then they live by food, and in the end they return to food. For food is the oldest of all beings. From food all creatures are produced; by food, when born, they grow. Because it is fed on, or because it feeds on beings, therefore it is called food." Food follows us into Heaven because God is the most sublime of foods.
