It's time for the Canadian government to finally take a hard look at Cuba and stop the environmental disaster that a Canadian company has been causing there for years, while everyone — including Global Affairs Canada — keeps their heads buried in the sand like ostriches.

**A Canadian Company Is Involved in a Major Environmental and Health Crisis in Cuba**

Moa, which has significant nickel reserves, is home to the Pedro Sotto Alba processing plant operated by Moa Nickel S.A., a joint venture between the Cuban government and Canadian Sherritt International.

Evidence highlights a severe crisis:
- Residents report toxic clouds from industrial furnaces affecting their health.
- Cuba's National Institute of Hygiene warns that sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide levels exceed permissible limits by up to 290 times.
- The local healthcare system struggles with widespread respiratory, oncological, and dermatological diseases.
- Despite Cuba exporting over $2.3 billion in nickel, Moa's residents live in extreme poverty with deteriorating housing and lack of clean water.

This crisis persists with the Cuban state's knowledge and the complicity of Sherritt International, which benefited from exemptions from environmental regulations prioritizing economic interests over health.

The Cuban-Canadian Coalition calls for:
1. Condemnation of the environmental injustice against vulnerable communities.
2. A public response from Sherritt International regarding its actions in Moa.
3. Media coverage on this complex situation.
4. Review of trade agreements with regimes failing to meet basic standards.
5. The establishment of an independent international commission to assess environmental damage in Moa.

Cuba suffers from both political repression and severe environmental hazards. Sustainability must not be a mere slogan if communities are sacrificed for unregulated extraction.

Alors que des Canadiens sautent des repas et ont de la difficulté à payer leur hypothèque, et à quelques jours de son discours devant le Parlement européen (au lieu du Parlement canadien), nous apprenons maintenant d’un journal étranger l’existence de négociations secrètes visant à faire du Canada un « membre associé » de l’Union européenne.

Il n’est pas question ici de diversification de nos échanges commerciaux : ça fait déjà plus d'une décennie que nous avons des relations commerciales sans tarifs avec l'Europe. Les Européens achèteraient davantage de nos produits aujourd'hui si le gouvernement libéral se tassait du chemin et autorisait les mines, les pipelines et les usines de GNL pour produire et exporter outre-mer.

Les Canadiens méritent des réponses : est-ce que la nouvelle du Wall Street Journal concernant l’adhésion du Canada en tant que membre associé de l’Union européenne est vraie?

Si oui, les politiques d’immigration européennes s'appliqueront-elles au Canada, alourdissant encore davantage notre système d'immigration alors que nos jeunes ne trouvent pas de logement?

Les serveuses et serveurs canadiens qui ont de la difficulté à payer leur loyer devront-ils payer plus d’impôts pour financer la lourde bureaucratie de l’Union européenne?

Les petites entreprises canadiennes seront-elles étouffées par la paperasse d’eurocrates qui n’ont jamais rencontré un seul entrepreneur canadien?

J’aimerais poser toutes ces questions au Parlement, mais il est fermé.

Une autre question : qui décide pour le Canada?

Le soudeur de Welland n’a pas élu un eurocrate pour réglementer notre acier. L’agriculteur de la Saskatchewan et le pêcheur des provinces de l’Atlantique n’ont pas choisi un régulateur agroalimentaire de Bruxelles qui n’a jamais vu nos prairies ni nos côtes.

Nous ne serons JAMAIS le 51e État américain. Et nous ne serons JAMAIS le 28e État de l’Union européenne.

Nous sommes Canadiens. C’est notre patrie, notre liberté, notre souveraineté, notre peuple.

Estamos presenciando el genocidio —ya no tan silencioso— del pueblo cubano. Estamos viendo cómo un régimen (@PresidenciaCuba @CubaMINREX) demuestra que gobernar sobre las cenizas de un país no es una utopía, sino una realidad.

Estamos presenciando la muerte lenta de un pueblo, sometido por un miedo plenamente justificado ante una maquinaria represiva que, durante décadas, ha perfeccionado los mecanismos de control, intimidación y castigo. El miedo ha llegado a superar la capacidad colectiva de un pueblo para poner fin a su propio letargo.

Y mientras Cuba se desmorona, también estamos presenciando a una administración estadounidense que, al parecer, todavía no ha comprendido que las sanciones, por sí solas, difícilmente derribarán una tiranía tan arraigada como la cubana.

El tiempo se agota. Si se pretende realmente evitar que Cuba termine convertida en un país en ruinas habitado por una población condenada a sobrevivir, hay que actuar con rapidez y con una estrategia mucho más efectiva.

Porque cuando se intenta combatir un cáncer únicamente con medidas insuficientes, existe el riesgo de que, cuando finalmente se decida actuar con toda la determinación necesaria, ya sea demasiado tarde para salvar al paciente.

CBC’s reversal is more than a wording change—it is a journalism and accountability issue.

A public broadcaster should not need public pressure before it can accurately describe September 11, 2001, as terrorism.

This is not some controversial interpretation of history. Nineteen Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and murdered nearly 3,000 people.

CBC initially instructed its journalists not to refer to 9/11 as a “terrorist attack.” After widespread criticism, CBC changed its guidance and acknowledged that, in the case of 9/11, journalists no longer need to attribute the description of the attacks as terrorism to a third party.

The question is obvious:

Why did it take backlash for CBC to apply clear, factual language to one of the most well-documented terrorist attacks in history?

History does not need to be sanitized.
It needs to be told as it happened.

🔴 #URGENTE Nos alarma un video publicado por el opositor y exprisionero político José Daniel Ferrer, en el que se anuncia que el disidente Roilán Álvarez Rensoler comenzó otra huelga de hambre en la prisión provincial de Holguín, exigiendo el fin de su detención por motivos políticos.

En el video, Arianna Álvarez denuncia que Roilán decidió protestar otra vez luego de sufrir maltratos el 25 de mayo, mientras estaba esposado, y ser llevado a una celda de castigo.

En marzo pasado, el activista de la Unión Patriótica de Cuba depuso, tras un paro cardíaco, otra huelga de hambre que había mantenido durante cerca de 50 días. 

Roilán Álvarez Rensoler fue detenido el 30 de enero junto a otros activistas. Las autoridades lo acusan de acciones contestatarias como pintar consignas antigubernamentales en #Holguín.

Recordamos que el Estado cubano debe respetar la dignidad y autonomía de cualquier recluso durante una huelga de hambre, sin recurrir a alimentación forzada ni a tratos crueles, inhumanos o degradantes. Las autoridades son responsables de la integridad física y la salud de todas las personas bajo su custodia.

La Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (@CIDH) otorgó medidas cautelares en beneficio de Álvarez Rensoler, tras considerar que está “en una situación de gravedad y urgencia, puesto que sus derechos a la vida, integridad personal y salud están en riesgo de daño irreparable en Cuba”.

Lizandra Góngora es una mujer cubana que lleva casi cinco años encarcelada en una prisión sin derecho a libertad condicional ni a régimen de mínima, por salir a la calle a manifestarse como miles de cubanos lo hicieron el 11 de julio de 2021. No daño nada ni a nadie.

Es la mujer con la sentencia más larga de todas las condenadas por las protestas del 11 de julio.

Es madre de cinco hijos, tres de ellos menores de edad, a los que ve muy poco porque fue trasladada bien lejos, hacia la Isla de la Juventud, porque no querían su energía, y sobre todo su coraje, en la prisión de mujeres de El Guatao.

Cuento todo esto porque si hay alguien que está sacrificando vida y que tiene cosas que perder es Lizandra Góngora. Aún así no se calla.

El 23 de mayo reunieron a todas la mujeres en el patio para que hablaran (se opusieran por supuesto) del encausamiento que le han hecho a Raúl Castro en tribunales de Estados Unidos. Todas tenían la palabra menos Lizandra. Querían humillarla pero ella encontró cómo hablar y que todos supieran lo que piensa. Por eso la recreo en la imagen como lo que es, una mujer que está segura de sí y que no baja la cabeza.

No habrá ni cambio, ni transición, ni mejoría, con Lizandra Góngora y tantas mujeres cubanas tras las rejas. Su liberación no es una petición más, es prioridad y así debemos abordarla en cada momento.

Statement from the Cuban Canadians Coalition to the Canadian Press and the Canadian Public

The Cuban Canadian Coalition wishes to bring urgent attention to the grave humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in Cuba — a crisis that continues to worsen while the Cuban regime attempts to silence the voices of millions suffering under repression, poverty, and hopelessness.

For more than six decades, the Cuban people have lived without the fundamental freedoms that Canadians hold dear: the right to freely choose their leaders, the right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and the right to participate in free and fair multiparty elections.

Today, Cuba faces one of the darkest moments in its modern history. Families endure daily blackouts lasting many hours. Hospitals lack basic medicines and medical supplies. Children go hungry. Elderly citizens survive without adequate food or healthcare. Entire communities suffer from collapsing infrastructure, scarcity of clean water, and a mass exodus of young people who no longer see a future in their own country.

The Cuban regime consistently attempts to blame external factors for this catastrophe. However, the primary cause of Cuba’s suffering is the systematic failure of an authoritarian political system that has denied Cubans the ability to democratically determine their future for over 67 years.

No nation can prosper when its citizens are forbidden from freely choosing their government, criticizing those in power, creating independent political parties, or demanding accountability without fear of imprisonment.

The Cuban people have repeatedly demonstrated their desire for peaceful democratic change. From the historic protests of July 11, 2021, to the growing civic resistance seen across the island today, Cubans have demanded liberty, dignity, and democratic rights — not violence.

We want to make something absolutely clear to the Canadian public and to the international community:

Any future bloodshed in Cuba will be the sole responsibility of the Cuban regime.

If violence erupts, it will not be because Cubans desire conflict. It will be because the regime continues to close every peaceful and democratic path for change, refusing to allow the Cuban people to freely decide their future through the ballot box.

A government that criminalizes peaceful dissent, imprisons political opponents, and suppresses democratic participation leaves its people with desperation instead of hope.

Canada has long stood as a defender of democracy and human rights around the world. We call upon Canadian leaders, journalists, civil society organizations, and citizens of conscience to speak clearly and honestly about the reality in Cuba.

Silence only benefits oppression.

The Cuban people deserve solidarity, freedom, and the opportunity to build a democratic future where no Cuban is persecuted for their ideas and where political power belongs to the people — not to an unelected authoritarian elite.

We ask Canadians to stand with the Cuban people, not with those who deny them their most basic human rights.
