Walking with Ancestors, Leading with Love: Inside DeAunt’e Damper’s Powerful Pride Tribute

History wasn’t just made on Sunday—it was felt in every heartbeat, every shout, and every tear on the streets of Seattle.

Deaunte Damper stepped into his well-deserved place as the Grand Marshal of the Seattle Pride Parade, marking a monumental milestone as the first Black man born and raised in this city to hold this honor. But as Deaunte reminded us all, this wasn’t just a moment of celebration; it was a Rally. It was a movement.

This powerful video captures the profound emotional weight, the radiant joy, and the uncompromising truth brought to the pavement. From honoring the beautiful spirits of those we have lost—like Dwone Anderson-Young and Hiram Salisbury—to channeling the revolutionary words of Bayard Rustin, Sunday was a soulful reclamation of space, time, and dignity.

As Deaunte so beautifully and urgently declared: “This is not performative. This is so actionary. You want our rhythm, but you don’t want our blues... Prioritize us.” Let those words echo long after the confetti settles. We are standing up, standing together, and refusing to be ignored.

A massive, heartfelt thank you to Seattle Pride for this historic occasion and for amplifying the homegrown voices that lead, organize, and heal our city every single day.
