The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a strategic consultation from 17 to 18 August to support the preparation of its annual trend analysis document for the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year. Held under the theme “Ethiopia and Interconnected Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Trends,” the consultation brought together several stakeholders to assess developments shaping Ethiopia’s national, regional, continental, and global environment.
Scholars and researchers from Addis Ababa University, think tanks, and national and international research institutions took part in the strategic consultation held on the 18th of August 2026. Opening the strategic consultation, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hadera Abara said the trend analysis is particularly important in light of rapidly changing and unpredictable regional and global geopolitical and geoeconomic developments. He stressed the importance of understanding these interconnected developments proactively and scientifically in order to formulate appropriate policy responses.
Ambassador Hadera further underlined Ethiopia’s commitment to continue its contribution to peace and security as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council, and its efforts to promote the Green Legacy initiative at the continental level and support the African Union’s institutional reform process. He described the current regional, continental and global environment as complex, dynamic and interconnected, emphasizing that strategic consultations of this nature provide an important platform for scholars and experts to exchange ideas and contribute to comprehensive strategy formulation.
The strategizing session held on the 17th of August 2026 brought representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Labor and Skills, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, and the Ethiopian Investment Holdings. Opening the session, Zerubabel Getachew, Director General of the Situation Room, stressed that annual, multi-sectoral, and participatory trend analysis enables Ethiopia to better strategize the effective implementation of its foreign policy and advance its geoeconomic and geopolitical interests. He further noted that such analysis helps the country remain proactive and vigilant in identifying and capitalizing on emerging opportunities while addressing challenges in an evolving international environment.
The consultation featured presentations and discussions on financial and investment trends, foreign trade, tourism, overseas employment, geopolitical trends in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Middle East, broader African geopolitical trends and institutionalization, including global peace and security developments.
The annual trend analysis, as one of the Ministry’s core products, intends to support informed and enhanced foreign policy decision-making, as it identifies emerging opportunities and challenges and informs the implementation of Ethiopia’s foreign policy objectives during the current fiscal year.

Today, we proudly inaugurate the new terminal at the Bahir Dar Dejazmach Belay Zeleke International Airport Terminal—a significant milestone for one of Ethiopia’s most important gateways. This project represents more than a modern terminal. Following the challenges Bahir Dar has experienced in the very recent past, it is a testament to resilience, recovery, and continued investment in the future.
The new terminal significantly enhances the airport’s capacity and passenger experience, supported by expanded aircraft facilities, upgraded infrastructure, improved access roads, and modern amenities designed to serve the region’s growing needs. Together with the urban transformation shaping the city, the new terminal positions Bahir Dar as another key hub for both international and domestic flights. It is my hope that the local community continues to safeguard its peace to reap the economic rewards of what a vibrant city like Bahir Dar offers.
