It’s interesting how the early structure of OpenAI developed.

Elon Musk helped support the founding in 2015, including providing funding and helping attract top AI talent, with the original stated goal of building AI for the benefit of humanity under a non-profit model focused on open research.

Over time, OpenAI transitioned into a “capped-profit” structure, with a for-profit arm created to raise capital and scale development. That shift ultimately led to a split between Musk and the organization’s leadership, and he left the company.

Musk did not receive equity in OpenAI at the time of its founding.

The current dispute centers around whether the organization’s direction and structure remain aligned with its original mission, particularly as it has grown into a major commercial AI company.

Any legal outcome, if successful, would not directly provide personal financial gain to Musk but would relate to governance and mission structure.
