OTD in 1434 - Birth of Eleanor of Portugal, mother of Emperor Maximilian. Eleanor & Maximilian were descended from John of Gaunt, through his daughter Philippa, Queen of Portugal. Despite what we’re often told Margaret Beaufort & #HenryVII were far from being the only remaining Lancastrians in 1485.
Eleanor was the eldest surviving daughter of King Edward of Portugal & his wife Eleanor of Aragon. She had multiple suitors for her hand, including Louis, Dauphin of France & Emperor Frederick. She herself is said to have chosen Frederick as marriage to him would give her the title of Empress as opposed to merely Queen. This was unfortunate as the marriage proved to be notoriously unhappy.
This was due to a mismatch in temperaments & expectations. Eleanor was a lover of luxury & struggled to adapt to the austerity of Frederick’s court. She was also a strong woman who wanted to be actively involved in decision making, which Frederick didn’t like. Following the deaths of several of their children he accused her of being responsible by feeding them Portuguese food & took sole charge of their remaining offspring.
Eleanor’s son Maximilian married Mary of Burgundy, step-daughter of Margaret of York, Dowager Duchess of Burgundy. (Mary was another Lancastrian descendant through her paternal grandmother Isabella of Portugal, who was the eldest child of Philippa, Queen of Portugal.)
Maximilian & Margaret of York became the primary champions of the Yorkist claimants who challenged Henry VII after 1485.
Maximilian’s own strong claim to the crown of England is often forgotten, but is a relevant consideration for his involvement. In particular, why would he have funded imposters, as Henry VII said the claimants were, when he could have advanced the genuine claims of himself, his son or other close relatives?
It is often argued that Margaret of York’s primary motivation was hatred of Henry VII & a desire for revenge for his role in the defeat & death of her brother #RichardIII. Hence the theory goes that she created/ backed imposters because she would stop at nothing to achieve her ends. Perhaps. But equally, she could have pursued the same ends by advocating the rights of other family members & it is striking that this did not happen.
There is another possibility of course, that the claimants really were who Margaret said they were namely her nephews, the Princes in the Tower. It is worth remembering also that Margaret had a close relationship to the Princes’ mother, Elizabeth Woodville, whose household she had lived in England & who had been involved in advocating Margaret’s own marriage to Charles, Duke of Burgundy.
