The Taus, a majestic instrument traditionally attributed to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, is named after the Persian word for peacock. Tradition holds that the Guru himself designed and played it.

Punjab Needs a Statesman Like Nawab Kapoor Singh.

Every generation produces politicians. Very few produce statesmen.

Punjab, today, needs the latter.

To understand what real leadership looks like, we must look back at the life of Nawab Kapoor Singh Ji, one of the most remarkable figures in Sikh history.

He lived in the 18th century, when the Sikhs were being hunted, their heads carried rewards, and survival itself was a daily struggle. Yet, even in those dark times, Kapoor Singh Ji thought beyond survival.

He understood that a community could not survive on courage alone. It needed organisation, discipline, resources, unity and a long-term vision.

He helped organise the Sikh forces into the Buddha Dal and Taruna Dal, which became important parts of the developing Dal Khalsa. He provided leadership during a period of intense persecution and helped lay the foundations for the Sikh political power that would emerge in Punjab in the decades that followed.

When Zakariya Khan, the Mughal governor of Lahore, offered him the title of Nawab in 1733, Kapoor Singh Ji accepted it on behalf of the Khalsa Panth.

Think about that for a moment.

Here was a man who could have pursued personal power, yet his leadership was rooted in collective responsibility.

He understood something that modern politics often forgets: leadership is not about becoming important; it is about making your people stronger.

Look at Punjab today. Drugs are destroying young lives. Our youth are leaving for opportunities elsewhere. Farmers are struggling, and our politics too often revolves around elections, personalities and short-term gains.

Punjab doesn't need another leader who knows how to win elections. It needs someone who knows how to build a future. Someone with the courage to take difficult decisions, the wisdom to unite people, the humility to serve, and the vision to think beyond the next five years.

Nawab Kapoor Singh Ji belonged to a different era, but the principles he embodied remain timeless.

Punjab has given the world extraordinary leaders, warriors, thinkers and reformers. Perhaps it's time we stopped asking who can rule Punjab and started asking who can rebuild it.

Because Punjab doesn't lack potential. It lacks leadership worthy of that potential.

“…Ranjit appears to take a pride in being surrounded by good-looking people, and I believe few, if any other, courts either in Europe or the East could show such a fine looking set of men as the principal Sikh Sardars.”

Leafs not on TV tonight because Sportsnet paywalled their Monday slate of games behind an app that barely works to show baseball on 5 channels and replays on another.

Embarrassing company.
