I'll be talking about my new book, "Freedom Lost, Freedom Won: A Personal History of America," on June 25 at the MLK Library in downtown D.C. If you're in the area, come join me and my friend Eugene Scott. https://t.co/g4auaDhzRb
Today's the day! My new book, "Freedom Lost, Freedom Won: A Personal History of America," is available wherever you buy your books. The official launch event is this evening in New York. If you're in the neighborhood, come on by!
Coming on February 3, 2026: My new book, "Freedom Lost, Freedom Won: A Personal History of America." It looks at two centuries of U.S. history through the eyes of one African American family -- my family -- starting with a great-great-grandfather who freed himself before the Civil War. Like other Black families, my ancestors fought again and again to win the right to pursue the American dream -- only to have that freedom brutally taken away. Everyone should read this terrific column by WaPo's tv critic Lili Loofbourow on Kimmel’s suspension. (She reports to the News side of the Post, which still has some integrity. Crickets, so far, from the Opinions side.) Gift link for those who have cancelled. https://t.co/efZZHYChz5
In the "personal news" department, this morning I let my colleagues know that I'm leaving The Washington Post. I'm retiring from my longtime journalistic home but not from journalism, and I'll keep you posted as I decide what my next chapter will be.
