The wider Middle East is stuck in a dangerous cycle of attacks, counterattacks, and fragile ceasefires. Iran’s strikes on commercial shipping violate international law and the Memorandum of Understanding.

Our Gulf partners play a vital role in regional stability, and it was good to be joined by GCC representatives today.

The EU seeks closer ties with the Gulf. Last night, the EU and Bahrain launched negotiations of new strategic partnership agreement.

With the GCC partners, we discussed the latest development and how we can protect the freedom of navigation both in the Gulf, but also in the Red Sea.

Europe is a reliable partner to the Gulf.

Today, the EU and Bahrain launched negotiations on a new Strategic Partnership Agreement.

It was pleasure to do this together with Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani and my colleague Commissioner @DubravkaSuica.

More than ever, the Gulf is at the centre of geopolitics right now. The EU and Bahrain will be working closer together on security, stability, and trade across our two regions.

Russia has long presented itself as a reliable partner and a source of stability beyond the West. As pressure mounts, that promise is wearing thin. Partners ask for support and get silence instead, left to manage on their own.

The question many governments now face is simple: is Russia still a partner worth the risk? Instability, broken commitments and shrinking influence make that answer harder to defend.

Hundreds of vessels have become part of an illegal maritime ecosystem, called Russian Shadow Fleet, designed to reduce the impact of sanctions on Russian energy exports.

By using aging tankers and opaque ownership structures, Moscow is sustaining oil exports while increasing environmental and security risks.

Russia operates a fleet of around 1,000 'shadow tankers' to circumvent sanctions. These ships are often old, underinsured, and operated through opaque ownership chains designed to obscure responsibility. Beyond transporting sanctioned Russian oil, they also carry environmental risks.

Russia occupied just a few square kilometres of Ukrainian territory in May 2026, its slowest advance in three years. At the same time, it launched 8,351 attacks on Ukrainian cities, the highest number since March 2022.

At least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured, the highest toll since April 2022 and almost double the figure recorded in May 2025.

When Russia cannot advance, it escalates. Ukrainian civilians pay the price.

The EU Business Forum in the UAE gathered in Dubai today, hosted by the Embassy of Cyprus and the Cyprus Business Council, to discuss economic priorities of common interest and opportunities to enhance trade and investment cooperation.

The Forum continues to support stronger business links between the EU and the UAE, including the ongoing negotiations towards an EU-UAE Free Trade Agreement.
