The peanut sunspot! Close-up on the Sun today on a spot not (more or less) round as usual. Taken in Halpha with the Soleye 300mm telescope at 13000mm FL (the Earth at scale in the corner)
THE SUN IS BLOWING A GALE: Earth is inside a stream of solar wind blowing faster than 700 km/s (1.6 million mph). The gale is blowing from a large Coronal Hole in the sun's atmosphere--and it's potent. First contact with the stream on Sept. 14th sparked auroras in the Lower 48.
The explosion hurled a CME directly toward Earth. NOAA and NASA models agree that it will reach our planet on Sept. 7th. The impact could spark a G1 to G2-class geomagnetic storm with high-latitude auroras visible during the lunar eclipse. SPACEWEATHER .COM
A SIGMOID ERUPTION ON THE SUN: When you see an "S" on the sun, it usually means something is about to explode. On Sept. 4th, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a textbook sigmoid eruption:

"Trees Of Haeckel" In his highly stylized & idealized artistic renditions of his observations of sponge anatomy, Ernst Haeckel created these famous renditions of the flagellated choanocyte canals, which I affectionately refer to as the "Trees of Haeckel". #Haeckel#FossilFriday
Heliophyllum halli. A solitary rugose (horn) coral from the Middle Devonian Onondaga Limestone in Western New York. This one described a perfect semicircle as it continued its sunward growth during continuous damage control following a Tipover event. #FossilFriday#Coral#Rugosa

#Tipover - In the life cycles of Sun-reaching organisms, Tipover is an event whereby an organism has, in fact, Tipped Over. In marine environments and observed in fossil beds, Evolutionary adaptations arise to counter-act the "to-be anticipated" negative growth events... Storms!
