What’s great about baseball is both teams have the same amount of chances and every out has to be earned. Life isn’t always like that, so you best take advantage of what you get.

Down 9-2, Jackson refused to quit while Francis Howell may or may not have let up a bit thinking victory was already in hand. Whatever it was, the Indians took advantage of what they had left and ended up making the Vikings fight for their own survival as well.

@EvanPiwo had to have had a ton of pressure on his shoulders getting the last out while trying to prevent what would be one of the biggest chokes in high school baseball history from a Howell perspective. He managed to get Jackson’s lead off hitter to pop out to end the game and lift his team to the state championship game. That shows real character to embrace responsibility with such significance when your number is called.

As for Jackson, the loss probably stings worse at 9-8 than losing 9-2 as the notion says: the higher you climb, the harder the fall is. Their boys nearly pulled off something unfathomable against what might be the best team in Missouri when their backs were against the wall. The Indians were on life support with three outs left in their season and scored six runs, but it wasn’t enough. Life can be cruel like that so God bless those kids for believing in each other until the end.

The Vikings live to fight another day because they ultimately did enough to win. This was a game where it turned out every one of the 21 outs truly mattered despite how lopsided the score was. Howell could’ve panicked when they felt like it was slipping away, but they have a squad full of winners with boat loads of confidence.

Games like this in sports are born from great opportunity and significance. Francis Howell and Jackson are very proud and successful athletic programs with amazing community backing. Both teams/communities have a lot to be proud about tonight.
