On April 2, 1968, Muslim workers at a bus depot located near the church saw a semi-transparent female figure standing on the roof of the church, emanating a glow. People saw the Virgin Mary on the roof. People kept coming to the church. They began bringing the sick, and miraculous healings from cancer and tuberculosis began to occur. News of the apparitions spread very quickly, causing a wave of intense enthusiasm among an incredible multitude of Christians, Muslims, Jews, and even non-believers. The crowds that gathered at night reached 250,000 people. Each appearance of the Virgin Mary was accompanied by deafening cries and the weeping of huge numbers of people: "We believe in You, Holy Mary! We bear witness to You, Holy Mary!" Photographer Wagih Riek Matta was the first to successfully photograph the apparition. "The appearance," he says, "was so sharp that it blinded my eyes. I was as if struck by an electric shock. I clicked the camera several times and suddenly found that my injured hand was healed."
