Over the past week, I’ve been here in Kalimantan documenting the fires and the people fighting them on the front lines.

Across Kalimantan from Pangkalan Bun to Palangka Raya, teams from Manggala Agni, BPBD, local fire services, volunteer crews, and many more are working around the clock in incredibly difficult conditions.

I deeply saddened to hear the Academy of Natural Sciences museum, the oldest natural history museum in America, will be shutting its doors for good at the end of the month. A massive loss to both the scientific and local communities

@thelongswell The fires here in Central Kalimantan are mostly peatland fires meaning they are burning deep in the dry peat around palm plantations and very difficult to put out completely without rainfall. Firefighters are working hard around the clock

@thelongswell Many people are concerned the fires will be getting worse as rain may not come until October. There are concerns that the fires will keep spreading into national park land and reforested land.

@thelongswell Yes, I am still here in Central Kalimantan and the fires show no signs of letting up unfortunately. Rain is desperately needed but is not expected until October.
