Great event, yesterday in Stormont. We can learn so much from "cross pollination" at events like these.
Hopefully some of the GB Levy funding will be extended to NI, to get badly needed treatment services increased.
Yesterday, the APG on Reducing Harm Related to Gambling hosted a roundtable event at Stormont, bringing together politicians, healthcare professionals, frontline service providers, officials, and experts to discuss the future of gambling treatment and support services in NI
Ireland's own @declynchwriter did something similar in his book 'Free Money' back in 2009, exploring the early days of online gambling. Well worth a read.
It's been one week since @TheAtlantic published my April cover story on America's sports betting boom. The reactions have been really interesting. A few observations below:
Just a gaming arcade in Waterford advertising that they're breaking the law on jackpot limits . . .
Regulation of the sector can't come soon enough.
(The jackpot limit is €3,000)
Anybody (in confidence) in gambling addiction recovery that would like to contact me plse about the week ahead? Am planning a mini-audio documentary on how flipping difficult this week is for so many but how so many others also have no idea how tough it is. Thank you. Damien.
Eight years after original publication, Tony 10 is now an audiobook. Thanks to Ruairi Conaghan for doing such a great job voicing Tony's incredible story.
Tony has done so much to raise awareness of gambling addiction. It's been a privilege working with him on this story. 8 years after publication 'Tony 10' is an audiobook.
Delighted to see that the audiobook of 'Tony 10' by @TonyJOReilly & @declynchwriter is out. A lot of people have asked about an audio version over the years.
Easily one of the best books on gambling addiction and recovery out there.

Disappointing to see @ShamrockRovers promoting their new "Responsible Gambling Partnership" with @netbet - a gambling company who don't even have a responsible gambling link or links to support services on their home page.

Great to see this. Regulated licensing of gambling is a step towards improved standards and player protections in the sector and and enforcement action against unlicensed operators. Licensing also allows for the creation of a Social Fund (a levy on gambling industry income).
A commencement order, allowing the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland to begin issuing remote and in-person betting licences, was signed yesterday by Minister O'Callaghan

Great thread. Thanks so much to the APG for giving us the opportunity to present on our work in NI and the differences in the gambling market and available supports services in NI and ROI. @ExternCharity
Last week, @ExternProbGam told us that people from NI who present to their services are more often experiencing harm due to land-based gambling than people from ROI. Why? Because the land-based gambling market in NI is less regulated, exposing people to dangerous products 🧵 1/4
Two very educational presentations from @ExternProbGam that highlighted the high rate of problem gambling in NI and the lack of services available for those suffering harm from gambling. This is a huge issue that affects many people in our communities.
Today the APG met to hear a briefing from Claire Donegan and Barry Grant from @ExternProbGam on the organisation's important work and what it is doing to support people experiencing gambling-related harms.
Good to see some restrictions on inducements to gamble in the licensing obligations for remote gambling, from @GambRegIRL.
This should see an end to 'VIP' treatment of people with substantial losses.

A 20% annual increase in gambling spending in Ireland (ROI) is extremely worrying - especially in the middle of a cost of living crisis.
