In the early '70s, Grumman almost went bankrupt due to rising production costs and strict, fixed contracts.

A massive sales contract to the pre-revolution Iranian government provided the cash flow that kept the company afloat.

Built for Fleet Air Defense, it protected the carrier battle group from Soviet bombers.

It was the only U.S. fighter capable of carrying and firing the massive AIM-54 Phoenix missile (100+ nautical mi. range)

Excellent low-speed handling made it a dangerous opponent in a close-in dogfight.
