“No Rain” was released in 1993 as the second single from Blind Melon’s 1992 self-titled debut album and became the band’s biggest hit. It reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped both the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and Album Rock Tracks charts, in the UK it peaked at No. 17. Its success was greatly boosted by the memorable music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, which introduced the world to the “Bee Girl,” played by Heather DeLoach. The character was inspired by the photograph on the band’s debut album cover, which featured the young sister of drummer Glen Graham dressed in a bee costume.
“Lonely Day” was written by guitarist and vocalist Daron Malakian and is one of System of a Down’s most personal and melancholic songs. Unlike much of the band’s politically charged material, the track focuses on loneliness, isolation and the feeling of being completely alone. Malakian has said that the song was inspired by a particularly lonely day in his life, although he has generally kept the specific circumstances private.
The track was released in April 2006 as the second and final single from Hypnotize, System of a Down’s fifth studio album. It became one of the band’s more successful mainstream releases, reaching No. 10 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and No. 10 on Mainstream Rock, while peaking at No. 23 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007.
