@liamgallagher WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? I FEEL LIKE I’VE MANAGED GET A TABLE AT MY FAV RESTAURANT. I’M SITTING AT A TABLE, THEY BRINGS ME THE BEST DISH AND THE WAITER TAKES IT AWAY BEFORE I’VE EVEN TAKEN MY FIRST BITE, SAYING: ‘SORRY, MATE, BUT I CAN’T TAKE YOUR MONEY!’” #FRAUD

About 10 years ago, I was on a PhD committee. It wasn't until the evening before the defence that I made my way through the thesis. The student was not a native English speaker, his grammar was very creative, and it was tough going.
In chapter 2 the English grammar dramatically improved. At first I was delighted, then I was confused, then I was concerned. I typed off a few sentences and googled them. They were from someone else's review.
I did a few more tests with other pages. It soon emerged that big parts of the first half of the thesis were copied from elsewhere. The second half was copies of the student's own papers (which was common procedure at the university in question).
While the student did refer to those other sources, it was pages after pages (including equations and references) that were not marked as quotes.
I didn't really know what to do about it. On the one hand, I could see the student's language difficulties and didn't want to cause him more problems than he already had. On the other hand, he had on the first page of the thesis -- as common in most places -- signed a declaration that all the content was original. Then again, this was clearly not the case anyway, since the thesis contained his own papers that had already been published, and that was deemed acceptable. So?
I checked if the reviews had been published. They had, and the content was copyrighted by some major scientific publishing houses. This meant if the university would go on to publish the thesis, they'd be breaking copyright laws.
After some back and forth, I went and asked a colleague. He went and called the student's supervisor. It was fairly late at night when the supervisor called back and thanked me, saying that the thesis could not be accepted.
Less than 12 hours before it was scheduled, the defence was cancelled, and so was the party afterwards which I'll forever be sorry for.
In the coming months, the student rewrote his thesis to remove the plagiarized content. It did not improve the presentation and of course it didn't change the scientific content.
His defence took part about 6 months later. He passed without problem. There was cake afterwards and happy parents. He was a good and smart student, doing solid work, but his English was, well, not his strong point.
To me this case still highlights how plagiarism guidelines fail science students who struggle with writing, especially in a second language. I have much sympathy for that.
I was never interested in foreign languages and wasn't any good at it. That I suddenly had to learn to read, write, and speak English more or less fluently just to do physics was in all honesty somewhat of a shock. (It still is, though I've now been speaking English for so long I sometimes forget it's a second language.)
This entire story convinced me that we really need to do something about the way we write papers in scientific disciplines. It is entirely unnecessary that we ask more or less everyone to summarize the state of the art of their research area in their own words, over and over again, if minor updates on someone else's text would do. We need some way to make this possible and save everyone time and headaches.
I am neither the first nor only one to propose this. The idea goes under the name "modular writing" and Google (or your search engine of choice) will tell you more. I am just writing this to say I support that in the scientific literature we switch to a modular writing model.
The university has since implemented automatic plagiarism checks. And I have since been reading PhD theses at least a week before the defence.
