💰💸Plano ISD is using up to $250 million in “Robin Hood” dollars - money that normally gets sent to the state - to help fund a Dallas Stars arena via a TIRZ (a special zone that lets local governments capture and redirect tax growth from a redevelopment area instead of sending it to the state).
Texas’s broken school finance system forces property-rich districts like Plano ISD (and Galveston ISD) to send local tax growth away, then lets them keep it for projects like this. Our own kids still face budget cuts while these deals keep the money local for sports venues.
