People didn’t “tell” pigeons where to go. They used homing pigeons trained to always fly back to their own home loft.
• Raise pigeons in a specific loft (that’s “home”).
• Take them far away in cages.
• Attach a tiny rolled-up message to their leg.
• Release them — they fly straight home using built-in navigation (magnetic field, sun, landmarks).
• Someone at the home loft grabs the note.
One-way only. For replies, you needed pigeons whose home was at the other end. Used for thousands of years (ancient Egypt to WWII) because it was faster and harder to intercept than runners or horses.
Nature did the hard part; humans just exploited it.
