I’ve long wondered about this practice: how is it ok, in today’s age, to have a
‘pseudonym’ columnist?

I’d understand for whistleblower; personal story of risk. But for a regular “analysis”column that can fire away anything on India’s most divisive issue without accountability?

'Speed' derives from the Old English 'spēd,' which referred to good fortune/success.

This sense of 'speed' lives on in 'Godspeed':

"God spede you" = "God prosper you"

We hope this brings you up to speed.

*State* imposes restrictions and shut-downs, but *protesters* are allegedly responsible for business losses — in most courts, if you tried to make such an absurd argument, you’d be laughed out of the room. However…

You’ve heard a lot about Umar Khalid through the media. But amid the media witch-hunt against him, there has been very little space for him to speak for himself, especially since he’s spent the last six years in jail.

So I want to tell you a little about my friend Umar, in his own words, as shared with his family and friends.

Here’s what the government and Delhi police are really telling you: ‘Guys, ’twas a famous victory! We won the match hands down. We saw to it that the rival team could not show up at the ground.’

That’s assuming this was a T20 fixture and dismissing any other contests or formats in this series yet unfolding. And ignoring the fact that the rival teams humbled them repeatedly, sometimes hilariously, at multiple venues beyond Jantar Mantar.

It’s also assuming that employing brute force to deny young people entry to a designated protest site in the capital of their own country, using 35,000 or more security personnel to do so, cancelling 250 trains, arresting people on board aircraft, yanking them off buses, detaining thousands across Delhi and the country at their homes or in police stations, cracking down on independent journalists, and deploying their discredited media attack hounds – was a victory.

And meanwhile CJI Surya Kant who made the Cockroaches a household word has added another fascinating insect to his lexicon, advising the authorities that “one should not use a hammer to kill a fly." Cockroaches, flies, gosh! What’s next in the queue, spiders that trap themselves in their own webs?

Today Delhi brought alive the old Sanskrit saying Vinash Kale Viprita Buddhi. When doom approaches, the mind losses its balance and judgement.

Saurav, I think you should post a tweet saying maybe this wasn't your best moment. We all say stuff impulsively that doesn't age well. It would show maturity & honesty to take this back.

The man who oversaw 2002 has an appetite for an infinite amount of violence. The question is whether he can afford it politically. He specialises in violence against Muslims. But what to do if Hindus are on the road, especially when a significant section is upper caste, upper class. There is no answer to that question in the saffron recipe book.

It is quite clear that mass illegal surveillance is happening in India, otherwise how do you detain people travelling in trains?

If anything, Elon is a bigger oligarch than Adani or Ambani. He's as much a crony capitalist as either of them. He was even put in charge of a US government initiative called DOGE until he fell out with Trump. After Trump's second election victory, Elon was invited to share the stage with him, only to perform what appeared to be a Nazi salute.

He continues to give the worst kind of people free rein on this platform, and is a major reason why right-wing hate has proliferated across the world. He has played, and continues to play, a significant role in the global rise of fascism, while advocating policies that enrich the rich and make the poor poorer.

Piggybacking on Elon to make your argument is a terrible idea.

We are slowly removing coincidence out of our lives. We don't pick a restaurant before even checking the ratings. We don't hear music before the algorithm ever predicts we'll like it. We don't even take a route before maps removes the wrong turn. Barely meet someone even before checking their profile. And none of that is necessarily bad. But that's what makes it interesting because every tool nowadays removes every tiny bit of uncertainty, but uncertainty is where a lot of your favorite memories came from. The place you found by accident, the friend you met because the plans changed. The street you weren't supposed to be on that ended up having the best restaurant you've ever been to. We've optimized our life so well to the point where nothing unexpected ever has room to even happen and a life with no accidents is easier to manage, but it's just harder to remember.
