漫画『乙嫁語り』は本当に素晴らしい名作ですよね。ただ、中央アジアの現地人の視点から読んでみると、読者を驚かせたり物語を面白くしたりするために、シーンや伝統がかなり誇張されていたり、時には創作されている部分がいくつかあるなと感じます。作者の森先生があえてそうしているのはよく理解していますが、ちょっと個人的に気になったポイントを書き残しておきます。

まず一番に思ったのは、アミルが最初から「強���て自立した女性」として描かれすぎている点です。彼女はいきなり一人で狩りに出かけたりしますが、19世紀のイスラーム社会の遊牧民の家族において、これはかなり不自然だと思います。本当のコチェボイ（遊牧民）の家庭だったら、嫁いできたばかりの彼女は「家族の中で最も立場の低い若い女性」として扱われます。ロマンチックな冒険どころか、家の中の年長女性たちに絶対服従しながら、誰よりも早く起き、誰よりも遅く寝て、ひたすら過酷な家事労働をこなすのがリアルな姿だったはずです。

年齢に関する設定も、普通の読者には一番衝撃的だったかもしれませんね。作中では20歳の花嫁と12歳の花婿という組み合わせですが、カスピ海周辺の遊牧民の間では、労働力の確保などの理由でこういった婚姻が稀に実在したのは事実です。ただ、これがすべてのアジアの文化だとは思ってほしくないなと思います。サマルカンドやブハラのような定住民（オアシス都市の民）の間では���くの逆で、12歳くらいの幼い少女が大人の男性のもとへ嫁ぐのが普通でした。

衣装やスタイルの描き方についても、少し思うところがあります。森先生の描く服はどれも美しいですが、あれは地域全体のスタイルをミックスして「平均化」したデザインなんですよね。実際は、遊牧民の家族やクラン（氏族）にはそれぞれ厳格に決められた色やオルナメント（文様）がありました。分かりやすい例でいうと、現代のトルクメニスタンの国旗にある5つの紋章（ギョル）がそれです。今でも州（ウェラヤト）ごとに、その地域のギョルがあしらわれた伝統的な帽子「タヒヤ（Tahya）」のスタイルが存在します。当時の人々にとって、模様は文字通りの「身分証」でした。

さらに、個人的にかなりあり得ないというか、完全に常識の枠を超えているなと感じ��エピソードがあります。アミルが服を脱いで下着（肌着）姿になり、それを抱えて外に飛び出して洗濯をするシーンです。19世紀ですから、遊牧民の間にもイスラームはすでに深く浸透していました。女性が髪を隠すのは絶対のルールです。さらにトルクメン人には、新婚の女性は最初の1年間、夫の年長の親族の前では沈黙を守り、深い慎み深さ（謙虚さ）を示すためにスカーフの端を口に咥えて口元を隠さなければならないという古い習わし（ヤシュマック）すらあります。そんな厳格な文化の中で、下着姿で外に出るなんて真似をしたら、間違いなく村から追い出されます。本人だけでなく、その家族や一族全体の一生消えない「恥」となったはずです。

そして最後に、もう一つ絶対にあり得ない創作があります。作中でアミルが「実家ではみんな服��着ずに、一枚の大きな布団で一緒に寝ていた」と語り、カルルクの前で全裸になるシーンです。ユルタ（ゲル）の中では家族全員が寝食を共にするため、新婚夫婦には「チムルディク」という仕切りカーテンが用意されるものの、プライバシーは限られていました。イスラームの戒律においても肌を露出することは非常に厳しく忌避されていたため、寝るときは必ず薄手の綿や麻の肌着（シャツやズボン）を着ていました。そもそも、全員が裸で一つの布団に入るような風習を持つ部族は、この地域には存在しません。個別、あるいは夫婦ごとに「テシェク」と呼ばれる敷布団や「コルペ」という掛け布団を使って、衣服を着たまま休むのが現実でした。

森先生の圧倒的な描き込みと作品への情熱には心から敬意を表しますが、これらのシーンに関しては、完全に現代的なファンサービス（フィクション）として割り切って楽しむのが正解なんだろうなと思います。

When I lived in London for the first time, I was surprised by how long the sunlight lasts in the summertime. There was still daylight at 10:30 PM, and I realized how people could stay out all night for parties in classic literature if they’re in pre-electricity England.

something i find interesting reading period literature is how late people would stay out at parties and holidays. for some reason i think of the olden days as austere and with perfect circadian rhythm and then i read about christmas eve services at 10:30 pm and partying all night
