I think why I still hurt so much thinking about Emet's departure is that the story gave me someone who felt familiar, like a lost memory returned, a "hello again" just as it asked me to let him go.

This is what I don't think people understand about those who favor Emet Selch. You can believe that the WoL had to stop him and still wish desperately that there had been another way. You can understand the stakes and still grieve for the person on the other side of them.
