the slow build of revealing that odysseus and his men were the sea people that the people feared. mentioning that the incidents were getting closer as they get closer to home. their actions in Troy being what destroyed zeus’ law
I’m beginning to think most of these people who are criticizing the movie watched with their ears and eyes covered.
She’s literally the reason they went to Troy in the first place and Odysseus was separated from his family for so long. She apologizes to Telemachus while holding back tears because she understands that she is the reason for his and Penelope’s suffering as well as Ithaca’s. She is why Zeus’ law was broken when Odysseus comes up with the Trojan horse plan. His entire moral battle is over what happened in Troy which is literally because of HER. She is essential for the narrative of this movie.
Is it not obvious that the killing of the suitors is such a violent excess as to illustrate that despite his self awareness of his shameful role in the cycle of violence, having once stained his soul the only escape is exile and handing the kingdom to an untainted generation?
I am glad i did not rush to criticize the styling of the goddess when this still came out because when the reason why Athena is dressed falls into place… it lands perfectly well. Everything makes sense. Big trust the process situation, it’s genuinely smart
What I LOVED about this scene is that the men hadn’t actually done anything to her… YET. Like, they kept their weapons outside and only asked for food but we’ve seen how they previously pillaged and murdered innocents. The movie asks you… was she wrong to beat them to it?
Interesting seeing you guys display your own biases on the modern language used in the film when Emily Wilson herself says that using Old English is not authentic & not any closer to Ancient Greek.
We’ve been conditioned to think British accents must be used in films like this.
Nolan sees The Odyssey the same as a Shakespeare film adaptation. Race/sex can be irrelevant. It’s why Denzel can play Macbeth or Don Pedro in Much Ado. Or Harold Perrineau can play Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. Or Helen Mirren can play Prospero(a).
It simply doesn’t matter.
The odyssey. Wow. The only thing I could thing of was how poetic it felt. People have complained about the “accuracy” and modern language but it was written so gently yet powerful, three hours flows so gently. There are highly intense moments that feel claustrophobic
Actually insane how great the odyssey was. A year and a half of discourse for genuinely nothing. Expertly crafted, emotional, tense, well paced, exceeded my expectations and then some. Strongly recommend
Christopher Nolan says The Odyssey is ultimately about the idea that a society can only function through respect for strangers. He believes that, despite 3,000 years passing since Homer, that fundamental truth about human nature hasn’t changed.
It’s so fascinating how hopeful Nolan was for humanity in The Dark Knight and how humanity essentially let him down. Oppenheimer and The Odyssey explore that failure of humanity deeply. I truly believe if Nolan made TDK today one of the boats would’ve killed the other.
I feel like Christopher Nolan has a really grim outlook for all mankind right now.
Oppenheimer left me feeling like I watched the moment we created the way to end mankind.
The Odyssey left me feeling like I saw the moment mankind chose a route toward an end.
Christopher Nolan says THE ODYSSEY is ultimately about the idea that a society can only function through respect for strangers.
He believes that, despite nearly 3,000 years since Homer wrote the epic, that fundamental truth about human nature hasn’t changed.
