PhD in Realist Eval of 'Open Campus'@CardiffMet, Social Theory, Karate 🥋, Welsh 🏴,(Critical) Realist evaluator & Authentic-Civic learning explorer
I am happy to say I graduated with a Distinction in my Sport Coaching & Pedagogy Masters, with 90% for my thesis. All my thanks and gratitude goes to @dcraldous for putting up with me & my tribulations through it all. You've been a guiding light. Shout out to the #PHELL crew too!
Fascinating presentation by @FarrellC98 about use of Realistic Evaluation to understand an Innovative, civic-minded approach for a civic university … notes that lecturers position themselves (doers, resisters, transactors) affect outcomes achieved toward the educational goal ⭐️
@MichaelACas A troubling yet fascinating read Mike! I remember Simon Sinek mentioned today's generations need to feel a sense of impact, I wonder whether that's a space we can explore to increase engagement. Learning that is real, impactful, meaningful (whose meaning?) that makes a difference
If school staff are given time & space (resource mechanism) & reassurance through a collaborative culture to reform their curricula (resource), they may feel overwhelmed & disempowered (response) due to rate of change & unclear messaging (context) leading to stagnation (outcomes)
Realist Evaluation in a nutshell...Context (people's culture, history, personal values shape and contour their reality) + Mechanism (made up of the resources we provide such as learning aids & their interaction with people's thoughts about the resource = specific causal outcomes
Without giving too much away, I also think Stephen Ball's theory has a central role to play in the future of Realist Evaluation. I still find the notion context everything & nothing, & unless people are asked about their history they may not raise it but still a casual mechanism.
Totally agree.
This is why I love and cite the spoof article "A Longitudinal Empirical Study Into the Buildup of Fluff in My Belly Button."
Also, gap arguments just reek of colonialist thinking!

This study is the perfect example (spoof) of how limiting the 'fill the gap' mindset is in academia. The way I always remember being taught is you are not filling gaps but building on and making a contribution to something interesting in a respective field

@kitchy2k @AddysgEducation Hi Christian, at Cardiff Met we are exploring the state of the teaching profession in Wales at the moment. I was wondering if you'd be interested in taking part in our research, I think your thoughts are important & should be heard. Feel free to DM me & we'll get the ball rolling
@ReeceShearsmith An outstanding performance. Sandra Hüller was deeply complex, captivating and at times brutally real. I'd love to know your thoughts on her and the film The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer, such a poignant film with an uneasy soundscape and chilling score.
‘Because love is an act of courage, not of fear, love is a commitment to others. No matter where the oppressed are found, the act of love is commitment to their cause - the cause of liberation.’ Paulo Freire
One final emergent from the day is the dilution of co-production & the move away from doing change to communities. Need for dialogic, relational/conversational ways of working through active listening & creating spaces and time for building trust. Doing 'in' or 'with' community.
Super day listening to communities and Ed Minister Jeremy Miles discussing Civic Mission in Wales. Key takeaways: 1) HEIs have sig Convening power as driver institutions 2) Viewing students as citizens and citizens as students, not as consumers or passive recipients of civic work
Amazing listening to the work of Cardiff Uni and the Grange Pavillion. A real paragon of how to embed civic into ways of working. New area to explore is the students role & their civic reflexivity (my term) during learning, rather than simply placements devoid of civic context.
Updated Primary PE and Sport premium guidance: https://t.co/jc3bmLSDgu
Key takeaways:
- Shouldn’t be spent on staff PE kit
- More guidance around capital expenditure.
- Coaches should not replace primary teachers.
- Can be used for repainting lines on playgrounds.
