iPhone in Europe can install third-party apps, but what happens when taken worldwide? Apple has just provided an answer.

Apple is doing everything possible to limit the ability to install third-party apps on iPhones leaving the European Union region. According to the EU's new regulations, starting with iOS 17.4, iPhone users in this area can, for the first time, install apps from outside app stores - to ensure fair competition in the digital app market.

This raises a question: What will happen if iPhones from the European market are taken elsewhere? Will these devices still be able to install apps from third-party app stores? After much speculation, Apple has finally given an official answer to this question.

The short answer is No - but with various limitations. According to a post on Apple's website, if you and your iPhone leave the European Union region for a short period - for example, a short trip, you can still access external app stores and install or update apps for a while.

But if you leave this area for too long - Apple does not specify the exact time - you will lose some features, including accessing and installing new third-party app stores. For apps installed from third-party app stores, they will still work but cannot receive updates from the installed app stores.

How can Apple limit users with these measures: first, you must have an Apple ID set up in a European Union member country. According to 9to5Mac, Apple has established a system to determine whether your iPhone is in the European Union to allow installation of external app stores, including factors such as:

Billing address for Apple ID.
User's current location (Apple only detects which country the user is in, not the exact location).
Current region set in iOS settings.
Device type - iPhone or iPad. Installing external app stores currently only applies to iPhone, not iPad.
Combining this array of information makes it difficult even for the best VPN services to bypass Apple's layers of checks. Because even though a VPN can change your IP address, other geographic information such as device GPS location and the information mentioned above are difficult to deceive.

Another equally challenging issue is that there are still not many external app stores available to users. While March 7th (European time) marks the official enforcement of regulations in the EU's Digital Markets Act, there is only one external app store registered with Apple, which is the Mobivention App Marketplace, catering to business customers. Other app stores such as MacPaw, Epics Games, and AltStore have announced that they will be present in the future.

Step 1: Press and hold the Home button.

Confidently converse with locals

One of the "fears" of solo travelers, especially on their first overseas trips, is language barrier, but now everything has been resolved. Former OnePlus co-founder launches new mid-range smartphone: Unique design, Dimensity 7200 Pro chip

The Nothing Phone (2a) possesses the qualities that have made Nothing, the new smartphone brand of former OnePlus co-founder, renowned.

Nothing, the new brand of former OnePlus co-founder, Mr. Carl Pei, recently introduced the Nothing Phone (2a). This is a trimmed-down version of the Nothing Phone (2), priced lower, yet still equipped with notable features in design, display, camera, and performance.

The main highlight of the design is the dual-camera system housed inside the NFC coil, creating what Nothing calls "eyes." The back of the phone curves 90 degrees around the edges, enhancing the device's resistance to impacts. There are three color options: Black, White, or "Milk."

The Nothing Phone (2a) comes with the Glyph interface, emblematic of Nothing, featuring 26 individually lit areas. These three lights support Glyph Timer, notifications, Glyph Torch, and Glyph Progress.

The Nothing Phone (2a) uses the Dimensity 7200 Pro chip, co-developed with MediaTek. This chip is manufactured on TSMC's latest 4nm process, with a maximum clock speed of 2.8GHz.

iPhone sales in China decline alarmingly

Apple has lost its position as the top-selling smartphone manufacturer in China to vivo.

According to reports from Bloomberg and market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple's iPhone sales in China have dropped by 24% compared to the same period last year, only within the first six weeks of 2024. This has caused Apple to fall to fourth place among smartphone manufacturers in the Chinese market.

In terms of market share, Apple has lost its position as the top-selling smartphone manufacturer in China to vivo. However, the sales of both companies have declined, leading to a 7% decrease in the Chinese smartphone market compared to the same period last year. The report indicates that vivo has been more successful in the budget segment.

Ivan Lam, a market analyst at Counterpoint, stated: "Huawei is currently increasing production to meet the demand for the popular Mate 60 Series. For Apple, they had a rather dismal business performance last year and need more time to regain growth."

Earlier in mid-January this year, Apple launched a spring promotion campaign in China. From January 18th to 21st, customers paying with eligible payment methods would receive discounts of up to 800 yuan on selected Apple products. Among them, the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 13 were eligible for discounts of up to 500 yuan.

Apple is hiring Vietnamese-speaking AI engineers for Siri

Vietnamese users will soon be able to converse with the virtual assistant Siri in their native language. Apple recently announced plans to recruit a new position: an AI/Machine Learning (ML) engineer specializing in the Vietnamese language in Singapore. This move indicates Apple's intention to diversify Siri's language support, with Vietnamese being the next target for this virtual assistant.

Specifically, on March 3rd, Apple's recruitment page posted content seeking new talent, individuals with passion, talent, and creativity, ready to face new challenges every day. The main task of this team will be to teach Siri how to understand and speak Vietnamese, as well as design and implement highly personalized experiences for users in Vietnam.

The main requirements for this position, of course, are proficiency in Vietnamese, the ability to work in an English-speaking environment, and strong programming skills, including experience with at least one object-oriented programming language. Additionally, candidates need experience with machine learning methods for classification, regression, or ranking problems, as well as knowledge of text processing, NLP techniques, and automatic speech recognition (ASR).

The mission will include natural language processing and speech components specifically for Vietnamese, using large amounts of data to address complex NLP and machine learning problems, as well as developing creative solutions for these issues.

Through this expansion, Apple not only demonstrates respect and concern for Vietnamese users but also lays a solid foundation for Siri's development, helping this virtual assistant become smarter and more useful than ever before.
