JUST IN: Rochester man in mental health crisis grabs officer’s gun and pulls trigger before fatal OIS
On March 11, 2026, Rochester police and a crisis response team went to an apartment for a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis.
Officers spoke with 47-year-old Cleavon White, who was acting erratically and paranoid.
They decided to place him on a 72-hour mental health hold, but he refused.
During the struggle to take him into custody, White grabbed an officer’s firearm and pulled the trigger, causing it to fire.
Officer Josiah Duit then fired multiple shots, striking White.
White’s wife and five children were present and huddled together in the opposite room.
