If you ask yourself why migrants keep flooding into Europe, this is the principal driver. If European governments continue with the current policy of simply absorbing those waves of migrants again and again, the #EU will fracture.

To be fair the greater divide might be between Europeans and Americans.

Obviously holidays play a massive part. You wouldn’t gamble any of your ~10 days on a road trip through Kyrgyzstan with uncertain roads, bad logistics, a rental car that may die, etc.

A French, Dutch or German couple with five weeks off can lose two days, sleep somewhere terrible and still decide it was the best part of the trip. Americans need the holiday to work, Europeans can afford for it to become a story.

Geography probably matters just as much. An American can get deserts, skiing, tropical beaches, wilderness, road trips, major cities and radically different landscapes without leaving the country, changing currency or dealing with a visa.

Europeans have domestic variety too, but borders are psychologically far more ordinary. Another country can be a normal weekend, you grow up switching languages, road signs and food within a two-hour flight, so international travel becomes an extension of ordinary life rather than some major expedition.

Then when Americans do travel abroad, the status game seems slightly different. It’s often about buying the best possible version of an established destination: Japan with every reservation locked in, Italy with the right hotel, a safari with a premium tour operator.

Europeans seem more willing to buy inefficiency. The missed bus, bad road, questionable guesthouse and three-hour detour aren’t necessarily failures, they’re part of the story. A campervan through Mongolia costs less than St Barts but gives you far more material for the next ten dinners.

Obviously exaggerated, but directionally I think it’s true. Americans have more money than holiday, Europeans have more holiday than money, so one optimises for certainty per day and the other for story per euro.
