Dear Asha,
Congratulations on becoming the new leader of Xbox.
I have a strategic suggestion that hope to help Xbox stand out and better compete with PlayStation and Switch.Core Idea:
Build a true all-in-one entertainment subscription by deeply integrating a high-quality movie and TV streaming service directly into Xbox Game Pass. Users should be able to finish a gaming session and instantly switch to watching a movie or series within the same seamless interface — no exiting the app or switching services. Additionally, provide regular free DLC and seasonal content updates for first-party and select third-party games to boost long-term value and retention.Consumer habits have changed dramatically since Microsoft explored the “entertainment center” concept 20 years ago. Subscription fatigue has turned into subscription familiarity — Netflix has already proven that a single seamless flow can be highly profitable. Now is the right time to execute.Key Implementation Recommendations:Start by partnering with smaller streaming and rental companies (avoid Netflix for now) to quickly build a solid content library with easier negotiations.
Over time, develop or acquire our own “Xbox Entertainment” service, using Azure, original Microsoft content (game-universe shows, documentaries, esports), and genres that gamers love (sci-fi, action, gaming-related).
Strongly expand the Xbox mobile app into a full “Pocket Xbox” experience: cloud gaming, mobile-compatible titles, hand-friendly games, plus seamless movie and TV streaming — all in one app. This allows users to play on the go or switch to watching content anytime.
Use smart tiered subscriptions: Keep affordable tiers for core gamers, and introduce a premium “Family Entertainment” tier (around $35–45/month) that bundles full Game Pass, cloud gaming, regular free DLC drops, and rich movie/TV content. This creates an almost impossible-to-refuse package for families and heavy users.
This strategy transforms Xbox from a pure gaming device into the ultimate living-room and mobile entertainment hub. It leverages Microsoft’s strengths in cloud, subscriptions, and cross-device ecosystems, delivering all-day user engagement that PlayStation and Switch will find hard to match.I believe a Microsoft-controlled approach (rather than loose partnerships) will drive meaningful subscriber growth, higher ARPU, and much stronger ecosystem loyalty.Excited for Xbox’s future under your leadership.
Best regards,
Terence
