OTD in 1868, James Buchanan passed away at his home, Wheatland, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. By mid-May, he was in markedly poor health, newspapers reporting he was lying ill at home from pleuropneumonia, his body racked by gout. Buchanan spent much of the last week of May in his upstairs bedroom, talking with family and friends. The end began the night of May 31 when labored breathing set in and his life began to slowly drain from his body. He passed the night without change, but just hours of life left in him. Monday morning, at 8:30 AM, he passed away. "Despite his weakened state, Buchanan is alleged to have whispered several times 'God bless my country.' Then, just before he passed away, he uttered his final words, 'Oh Lord, God Almighty, as Thou Wilt.' However, according to his attending physician, Dr. Carpenter, his last words were indistinguishable." CoD: pleura pneumonia or rheumatic gout or another form of rheumatic disease.
The funeral illustration comes from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, June 20, 1868.
