When I was homeless and actively addicted in San Francisco, one of the biggest reasons I stayed stuck was because I knew there were rarely going to be real consequences. Everyone knew it. You could openly use drugs, steal, deal, overdose, camp, and most of the time nothing would happen besides maybe being told to move along.

That environment doesn’t encourage recovery. It normalizes chaos and addiction until people stop believing change is even possible.

I’m not saying arresting people alone fixes addiction because it doesn’t. But when there is zero accountability, zero pressure to change, and drugs are easier to access than treatment, people get trapped in that cycle for years. I know because I lived it.

@DanielLurie Yes! That's the real support that the city needs! The authorities have to be there with the people listening and helping! Please don't do this as a patchwork instead of that attack the roots of the problem.
