I regularly reminded him of his hilarious quips, particularly this one in the Evening Standard. To many, he was Britain’s greatest film director, an epithet he found hilarious and somewhat baffling. But to me, he was Terence, my neighbour and my friend.

I am deeply saddened by the death of film director Terence Davies today. Terence was a dear family friend and a great influence on me. I was lucky enough to spend many happy hours in his company sharing our deeply held love for music and the great composers.

His work was imbued with music throughout and I know how important it meant to him. Terence was an absolute genius and one of Britain’s greatest talents. He would recite poems from top to bottom and recall stories with great fervour. Terence also had an acerbic sense of humour.
