New York City plans to open government-run grocery stores that undercut private competitors by 30 percent on everyday staples.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the selected operator will pay no rent or taxes and must keep shelves stocked with discounted meat, produce, dairy, and other basics.

If the deep discounts still leave a shortfall, the city will cover the difference with subsidies.

The stores will skip alcohol, cigarettes, lottery tickets, and prepared foods while promoting healthier options.

Local supermarket owners warn the plan will directly harm neighborhood grocers who rely on those same core items for revenue.

Mamdani argued the city is large enough to support both the existing markets and five new city-run locations, one in each borough.
