#Syria | The ministry of culture in STG celebrates what its official account describes as the anniversary of the "martyrdom" of Abd Al-Basset As-Sarout.

As-Sarout is a highly controversial character, he rose to fame as a leader of anti-regime demonstrations in Homs, later on the leader of a terrorist group, which committed sectarian atrocities in Homs and its countryside before he was eventually killed by regime forces.

He appeared in video statements announcing his allegiance to ISIS and inciting against Alawites and other minorities, even going as far as calling for ethnic cleansing of Alawites and Christians in one of his videos. However, he remains an icon of the anti-Assad movement despite his Islamist and sectarian rhetoric and crimes.

Posts like this raise many questions on the type of characters and principles the STG seeks to reinforce and promote in Syria and its youth, especially in a time when sectarian tensions are at a boiling point and the unity of the Syrian people at its lowest as non-Sunni sects have a largely pessimistic view for the future.
