Over the years, infant elephants and rhinos hand-reared through our Orphans’ Project, and now living back in the wild, have gone on to have their own wild-born young. These calves demonstrate the impact rescuing just one orphan can have for a species.

Lenny is one of these special babies, born to rescued orphan Lima Lima.

Toto’s rescue was unforgettable—but so is his personality.

Three years ago, a tiny calf appeared at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, escorted by a group of ex-orphans who had somehow found him alone in the bush. Knowing he needed help, they brought him to the one place they trusted.

Since that day, Toto has brought joy and chaos in equal measure — like this moment, where he keeps purposefully collapsing on the mattress Joseph is trying to move. From a mystery rescue to a little elephant with big bravado, Toto’s story is only just beginning.

When you’re just a few days old, the world can feel very big — especially when the shallow water trough turns into a surprise paddling pool!

Sunni, the first calf born to Sities, is the latest baby born to an orphan we rescued, raised, and rewilded. As you can see, he’s still finding his feet, but while his mum had only us to take care of her, Sunni has his mum, multiple nannies, and us to keep him safe (and extract him from his the trough if necessary - good work mum!)

Twiggy has really taken the ostrich twins under her wing! Our lovely, leggy giraffe is a great friend to all the orphans, but she has been going out of her way to spend time with Bam and Boozle. Seeing how comfortable Boozle is resting in her presence here, the feeling is clearly mutual.

Twiggy and Boozle are two members of our eclectic, beloved orphan herd. While we are best known for raising orphaned elephants and rhinos, we offer a family and a wild future to any creature in need.
