Ambassador Teshome Toga resigned from his position as Commissioner effective 13 March “after his request to not continue as Commissioner was accepted by the government.”

He has subsequently been replaced by Temesgen Tilahun, former deputy commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), who also served as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s foreign policy advisor.

Furthermore, the Commission’s Deputy Commissioner of Logistics and Management, Dr Atinkut Mezgebe, is replaced by Tesfamalem Yihedego effective 21 March. The Commission did not mention the reason behind the replacement of Dr Atinkut, a former Central Committee member of the TPLF who resigned from the party after he assumed his position at the commission.

The NRC was established by the Ethiopian government in November 2022 for two years to assist with the demobilization and reintegration of an estimated 300,000 ex-combatants across the country.

Dire hunger crisis grips #Ethiopia's war-torn #Tigray region

A Scottish charity chief has sounded the alarm on the developing hunger catastrophe in Ethiopia's Tigray region, warning it is "as extreme as anything I've witnessed" in the wake of the devastating two-year war.

The war raged from 2020-2022, destroying vital infrastructure, crippling health services, and claiming thousands of lives before a ceasefire in November 2022. Now, the Ethiopian government projects a staggering 15.8 million people will need food assistance in 2024, including 4 million displaced and 7.2 million requiring emergency aid.

The crisis is compounded by severe shortages of teachers and classroom damage, with around 15,000 educators still unaccounted for and 95% of schools in central Tigray destroyed. A pediatrician in the capital #Mekelle reported threefold increases in malnutrition cases, with hunger alone causing child death rates to double.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, head of the charity Mary's Meals, recently visited the devastated region and issued an urgent plea: "People are already dying of hunger, and everything we're hearing points to a well-founded fear of much worse if the world doesn't respond...We need to ensure the terrible outcome Tigray is heading for doesn't happen, but it will without immediate action."

The charity has launched an emergency appeal, sharing harrowing accounts from places like Ara Primary School, where over 300 students dropped out to seek work for food. When Mary's Meals visited, 15 immediately re-enrolled just at the prospect of a daily meal - underscoring the critical need across Tigray.
