Josef Mencik, a man of mystery, left behind a legacy that is as intriguing as it is inspiring. His early life remains largely unknown, with his date of birth and family lineage still contested. What is known, however, is that he hailed from the Böhmerwald region of Czechoslovakia. His family later in life included his wife, Ema Mencikova, and their two children.

Mencik’s fascination with the medieval era was not limited to his personal life. He purchased and restored Dobrš Castle, a 14th-century structure that had been severely damaged by heavy rainfall and a fire. Over the years, he amassed a remarkable collection of antiques and curiosities from centuries prior, turning the castle into a pseudo-museum. He lived a chivalrous life, abandoning modern conveniences like cars and electricity, and instead employed torches and candles to light his residence.

His defiance against the German invasion during World War II earned him the nickname of the “Last Knight”. In 1938, when Nazi tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia, Mencik, clad in full medieval armor, stood up to them. This act of resistance, though symbolic, was one of the few acts of defiance against the Nazi regime at that time.
