Hundreds in #Myanmar are being killed by the military, and millions are deprived of aid by donors, as reported by @UNHumanRights.
Have we become so careless and irresponsible to ignore the plight of the #Rohingya and other minorities, and of all suffering civilians in Myanmar?
The people of #Switzerland have rejected a proposal to cap their population at 10 million — including limits to immigration/asylum detrimental to both Swiss interests and human rights.
Migration does need careful management but this was a victory for solidarity and common sense.
Solidarity with Omar Artan, the #WorldCup referee from Somalia denied entry in the United States.
How sad to see a country whose greatness owes so much to the talent of migrants and refugees refuse entry to a man of great talent.
Migration and refugee flows are not an invasion of course — but a complex situation to be managed in just and effective ways, respecting the rights of all. And that’s possible.
Europe must not be intimidated by the “invasion” rhetoric — false, useless and fundamentally racist.
In these difficult times for republics, I wish mine a happy 80th birthday.
In questi tempi difficili per le repubbliche, auguro alla mia buoni 80 anni.

Governments reacted indignantly to Israel’s treatment of flotilla activists and Ben-Gvir’s outrageous display of violence.
Good.
But Palestinians in Gaza and the W Bank have suffered from violent abuse for decades.
This calls for the same indignation, by the same governments.
It is appalling that even a @UN convoy delivering help to people in need has been hit by a Russian drone in Ukraine — of course amidst the wider, daily horror of indiscriminate Russian attacks affecting civilians.
Solidarity with humanitarians and all civilians in Ukraine!
Today, delivering aid to people in severe need of assistance and under constant attack in #Kherson, a clearly marked @UN vehicle was struck by a drone.
Over 200 civilians, mostly older people, remain there.
More from the Head of @UNOCHA in Ukraine, who accompanied the convoy⬇️
I’m deeply grateful to the Government of Japan for being awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by His Majesty the Emperor — marking Japan’s commitment to the @UN, to humanitarianism and to helping refugees worldwide.

A leader for the good world!
On the first anniversary of his election, let us wish Pope Leo XIV strength and courage as he continues to work humbly but steadfastly for peace, truth and justice.
Because that is what matters.

Congratulations to Louise Arbour — an excellent choice to have such a remarkable woman of principle, experience and wisdom as the next Governor General of Canada!
The tragic plight of the #Rohingya continues — persecuted in their country, Myanmar, and living in hardship in Bangladesh and elsewhere, without any solution in sight.
The Rohingya and all people in Myanmar deserve better than being so utterly neglected by the rest of the world.
In 2025, nearly 900 Rohingya refugees were reported missing or dead in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal, making it the deadliest year on record for maritime movements in South and South‑East Asia.

"In some cases, it would be better for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality." In other words, exactly what Pope Leo is doing: speaking out on matters of morality, like war and peace, and care for the poor, the hungry and the migrant. These are fundamentally moral matters.
God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.
So, now — hopefully — back to diplomacy, so unnecessarily interrupted six weeks ago by a useless war which the ceasefire will now — hopefully — stop.
But diplomacy will only succeed if it keeps the interests of the people at the centre.
Difficult, in a “my country first” world.
Death is always lurking. We see it in violence, in the wounds of the world, in the cry of pain that rises from every corner because of the abuses that crush the weakest among us, because of the idolatry of profit that plunders the earth’s resources, because of the violence of war that kills and destroys. #Easter
I’ve long admired the steady, principled leadership of Secretary-General António Guterres. His commitment to human rights, the dignity of refugees, climate justice, and confronting global inequality reflects the kind of moral clarity our world urgently needs. It was an honor to meet him this week at the UN.
NYC has always been a home to the world, shaped by the dreams and struggles of people from every corner of the globe. Our relationship with the United Nations is part of that story, and it’s one we must continue to deepen. Together, we can build a more just future for people around the world.
