I get many messages asking the same thing : #MutualFunds / Indian markets have given no returns for 2 years. What should we do?
One simple answer.
Ask yourself: did you invest in an equity fund for just 2 years ?
For most people, the answer is no.
Do you have 100% equity allocation ?
For most people, the answer is also no.
Debt and other assets like gold usually provide some cushion during such periods. And gold has done more than just provide cushion.
We invest in equity for the long term. Long term means at least 5 years.
Markets may stay sideways for 2 more years, or they may hit a new all-time high next month. No one knows when that will happen, but most of us know that markets will eventually make a new ATH.
This is for the simple, disciplined investor who keeps investing every month.
There are also people who go all-equity or invest for less than a year while trading trends. That is a different approach and needs skill and experience.
Conclusion:
Whether you continue your SIPs or not is your call.
But this is the nature of equity. It is not a straight journey. It moves in cycles and keeps surprising us.
Do the things that are in your control : build your emergency fund before committing money to equities. Get your health and term insurance sorted.
And most importantly, set your asset allocation according to your risk appetite, goals, and stage of the investing journey.
Personally, I use 12–12.5% for all my future projections and goal calculations.
For me, 15%+ is a high expectation going forward.
If we do 15%+, it is a bonus.
Keeping expectations low will work in your favour and will push you to earn more.
Do not live like a miser trying only to save and invest. Life is a more precious gift ,enjoy it while it lasts.
Fully agreed.
Many of us are first-generation equity investors.
And many of us should feel proud that we saved our parents from falling into the trap of LICs, ULIPs and other products that sound good but turn out to be bad investments.

After researching and writing about global funds, I started SIPs in Axis Global Equity FoF and Edelweiss Greater China Offshore Fund.
Axis stopped fresh as well as existing inflows after 2 months.
Currently, only Edelweiss is running.
I am parking the pending amount in a liquid fund and will do a lump sum into direct ETFs on platforms like INDmoney or Vested.
If the accumulated amount becomes large enough, I may also consider the GIFT City route.
No reco.
