In 2004 I joined a Fortune 500 company in Mumbai, campus placement. I left the job within 6 months, toxic culture.

In 2005 I joined another Fortune 500, worked my way up. In 2007 a German manager directly hired me via LinkedIn in a lead role, setting up their business in India. We built the company and a brilliant work culture with a handful German and Indian colleagues including my manager. When he returned back to Germany, the Indian bosses bought back the toxic culture.

I was looking for a job when a French manager directly hired me, again via LinkedIn to set up India operations for a French giant, I was the second employee, he was first one in India. We built the company and a brilliant work culture growing it to 300 people within 4 years. He left for France, the Indian bosses bought back the toxic culture.

Just when I was beginning to look out, my first German manager met me in Gurgaon over a beer. Random, unplanned.

Within 6 months I was in Singapore leading south east Asia and pacific business.

I am still with the same manager, now in Europe. I have never seen him disrespect me, question me or for that matter anyone. He is one of the most successful managers in the group.

So what is the most important soft skill for a successful manager?

In my view, it’s how you treat others followed by outlook towards work life balance. If you have the trust and respect of your people, if you trust and respect them, if you treat your team well, the work will get done.

I treat my team exactly as I was treated by my mentor, my manager. My team remains a high performing team.
