Freelancers waiting on responses, is a major trigger to slow income phases.
Know, Security funds for inconsistent income earners doesn't stands still, as it is for fixed income earners.
It depletes through slow income phases.
My biggest freelancing mistake:
Thinking clients would just come to me.
I'd finish a project and wait.
Post on social media and wait.
Update my portfolio and wait.
Meanwhile, my bank account was looking sadder every day.
I had no money.
No prospects.
No plan.
Then I realized.
Client's don't find you.
You find clients.
Now I operate in phases.
Phase 1:
- Send out free value
- Land clients
Phase 2:
- Build a good foundation with new clients
- Figure out how to overdeliver
When I can do both, I do.
When I can't, I alternate.
But I never just wait anymore.
Waiting is how you go broke.
Freelancers are told: ‘Build 12 months savings first.’
Then slow months happen.
The savings deplete.
And the cycle restarts again.
At what point does survival stop becoming preparation
and start becoming permanent postponement?
Freelancing is always seen as the dream, having your own schedule, freedom, and can do what you want. But it's also its downside: You can do what you want. So many ideas, what to choose? And you have to keep going, no stopping possible, right?
How are you guys doing it? :) I'm like 2 years in.
@MorufDamilare@BasitOriola Freelancing becomes exponentially harder when you’re solving not just creative problems, but constantly changing business decisions underneath them too.
A lot of freelance stress isn’t even the workload. It’s shifting expectations, unclear direction, and moving targets mid project.
One underrated advantage of having clearer financial priorities is being able to walk away before chaotic clients consume months of your energy.
Yes, I almost lost my mind on this project.
A client reached out after seeing my work on Instagram and hired me to create content for his brand. He told me everything I needed was in his Drive folder, so I got straight to work.
After delivering eight different pieces of content, he suddenly said they looked “too luxurious.” Then, three days into the project, he realized the brand voice and product files he gave me were outdated and uploaded completely new ones.
I created a scene draft for approval before starting again, and he told me to proceed. After I delivered the podcast, he mentioned he wanted the product promoted, something he had never told me before. Then he asked me to study his church’s website and blend the church doctrine into the company’s brand voice.
At that point, I decided to walk away. Thankfully, I was paid for the two weeks, but those were easily the most challenging two weeks of my career.

@iamsnrjnr@X Freelance income often creates a cycle:
> Overspending in high months
> Panic in low months.

The issue usually isn’t the amount. It’s unclear priority protection.
It's a "Category Budgeting Failure".
Seeing “money left” inside a category doesn’t always answer:
Is survival protected?
Are important needs still safe?
Is this comfort spending or essential spending?
Because the brain is silently comparing:
Current comfort v/s Future uncertainty
Most spending guilt doesn’t come from wants themselves.
It comes from uncertainty around: “Am I unknowingly compromising something more important?”
People talk about budgeting like income stays the same every month.
But inconsistent income changes everything.
It’s figuring out what can safely shrink without destabilizing your entire life.
Priority-based budgeting changed that for me.
