Happening now... @UMNews Regent Beeson & President Gabel discussing disruption and change in higher education. Ask them to consider new funding models (instead of cuts) presented by @GopherMTennis, @GopherMGym, @GopherCCTF in order to #savegophersports https://t.co/VrUIaTjK71
@DuluthGuy@usatodaysports And why cut the most cost efficient teamsof those that operate on a loss? MN AD cut 3 of the 4 cheapest men's teams that lose money. If $ is the issue, why not cut the teams losing the most $ and consider team's fundraising and plans to support themselves?
Good article today in @usatodaysports highlighting the hypocrisy of schools cutting staff and sports to save trivial amounts during a pandemic, yet somehow have enough money to pay millions to fire coaches for not winning games during a pandemic.
@DuluthGuy@usatodaysports If they were paying all the bills schools wouldn't be facing millions in losses this year...the $600k track team cost doesn't cost $33m shortage this year. And teams fundraised enough to support themselves and presented self-sustaining plans the AD refused to consider...
This is how much schools are willing to pay to get rid of football coaches who don't win enough. Yet these same schools claim they can't find the money to continue to fund all their teams for a fraction of the cost. Apparently wins mean more than educating students. #hypocrisy
Statistic of the day: Contract buyouts for Top 25 highest paid NCAA head football coaches equal $513M (even including 3 private univ. coaches listed as zero.) Over half a billion in buyouts in one NCAA "amateur" sport. Source: USA Today database.
A former Gopher from one of the teams Coyle cut is running in this elites only marathon tomorrow. Just another example of these teams springboarding students to the elite ranks in the US while continuing their sport on their own after college.
About 100 elite runners will compete Sunday in Chandler, Ariz., on a 4.3-mile flat loop. The Marathon Project field includes athletes who finished in the top 10 at Olympic trials as well as former Olympians. There are also six Minnesotans in the field. https://t.co/Yw2ye6EYSr
Looks like Gopher admins are starting to feel the heat from public criticism right now...Gopher's CFO for athletics steps down to take job paying $150k less than her UMN job. Moving closer to family, but pay cut & timing seem to suggest she's fleeing a sinking ship.
#Gophers losing another deputy athletic director, with Rhonda McFarland returning to Idaho to work as a financial manager for the state. https://t.co/mY8Lm0kPZI
Mark Coyle getting called out for senseless sports cuts again in the Star Tribune this morning. Glad to see the public finally sees what's going on! https://t.co/T0zVTY8a9V
Still hard to believe this was the decision and people allowed it to happen?!?!? I would love to see every program at Clemson, and I mean EVERY program stand up to this complete injustice to these T&F athletes!
What a joke. What are they going to do if they don't follow this?...cut the team and lay off those staff?...too late. Lowball move by @ClemsonDRad...shame on you
Why has it become an acceptable practice to eliminate opportunities for student-athletes to make up for mismanagement by Athletic Directors & universities? This should be an unacceptable solution and the responsible people held accountable.
@tommyloew@KFANRosen@60Minutes That would certainly save money, but would most definitely be very disappointing to thousands of people across the state and country who enjoy Gopher Sports. Also would put MN at a competitive disadvantage being the only major university with no sports.
@tommyloew@KFANRosen@60Minutes Those 2% of students who are athletes at UMN and across the NCAA are benefiting from the education that experience provides. Just as we also have limited # of students in top bands, theater performances, each research lab etc. Different extra curriculars all enhance edu
